How to Promote Shop Pay Installments on Social Media

Promote Shop Pay Installments on social without an Affirm hold. Activate-Approve-Attach-Audit covers approved copy, required disclosures, and where posts go.

You can promote Shop Pay Installments on social. Shopify publishes the exact lines you are allowed to use, the disclosure that has to sit beside them, and the compliance rules behind both. The catch is that every one of those lines is regulated lending copy, and a caption that improvises the wording can get your installments account put on hold in the middle of December.

So the job is not “write a fun post about paying in four.” The job is to activate the feature properly, pick approved copy for your country, attach the right disclosure wherever the format allows, and audit it before Q4. That is Activate-Approve-Attach-Audit.

Key Takeaways

  • Activate before you announce: Shop Pay Installments needs Shopify Payments plus Shop Pay, a store in the US, Canada, or the UK, and orders between $35 and $30,000 (or £50 to £30,000). Check that the product page banner shows before a single Story goes out.
  • Approve means Shopify’s words, not yours: Shopify Help says to use only the approved social media messaging for your country. The US toolkit says the caption text must be used word for word. Write your own hook and product line around it.
  • Attach the disclosure to every format: A shortened disclosure exists for feed posts and Reels that cannot hold a link. UK posts need the full Financial Promotion Disclosure in the caption or on the creative. No fit, no post.
  • Audit for the two traps: trigger terms that demand a representative example, and fair lending rules that ban targeting installments messaging by age, gender, or other protected groups. A hold can take up to 30 days to lift.

Why should a Shopify store promote Shop Pay Installments on social?

Because the people who use it are on their phones. Adobe Analytics reported that buy now, pay later drove $20 billion in US online spend during the 2025 holiday season, up 9.8% year over year, with 82.2% of those purchases made on a smartphone. Cyber Monday alone crossed $1.03 billion in BNPL spend (Adobe). In Adobe’s November 2025 survey, shoppers said they were most likely to use it for electronics, apparel, toys, and furniture (Adobe).

For a Shopify store, the mechanics are already built. Shop Pay Installments lets eligible customers split an order at checkout, and you receive full payment within 1 to 3 business days after capture, minus the fee. Affirm collects from the customer, and Shopify says you are not at risk if the customer stops paying (Shopify Help). The feature also comes with a marketing toolkit: approved messaging, brand artwork, and a compliance page (Shopify Help).

What the toolkit does not do is tell you how to fit that copy into a Story, a carousel, a pinned comment, or a saved DM reply. That is the gap this plan fills. It sits next to the BFCM social plan and the holiday gift guide, because a payment option is caption content in both.

The Activate-Approve-Attach-Audit framework

Activate-Approve-Attach-Audit runs in order. Do not schedule a post until the banner is live on a product page and you have read the compliance page for your country once, start to finish.

Phase 1: Activate

Goal: confirm your store qualifies, turn the feature on, and make the storefront show it before social sends anyone there.

Shop Pay Installments is available to stores in the United States selling in USD, Canada selling in CAD, and the United Kingdom selling in GBP, with both Shopify Payments and Shop Pay activated and only one Shopify Payments account in one market (Shopify Help; Shopify Help). Eligible orders run from $35 to $30,000 USD or CAD, and £50 to £30,000, including discounts, shipping, and taxes (Shopify Help).

Activate checklist:

  1. Check the eligibility list before anything else. Affirm reviews stores after activation and can suspend accounts that require a password to enter, do not use English as the primary language, are primarily B2B, or sell regulated or prohibited products (Shopify Help). A store in an onboarding payout hold may need to wait until the hold lifts.
  2. Turn it on in Payments. Shop Pay Installments lives inside the Shopify Payments settings on your Payments page (Shopify Help). There is no cost to activate; the cost is a higher transaction fee on orders that use it, and you can view the exact rates under Manage payment methods, then View payment rates (Shopify Help).
  3. Confirm the product page banner. Themes installed after January 31, 2022 may already show the installments banner below the price. If yours does not, the fix is adding {{ form | payment_terms }} directly under the product form line in your theme code (Shopify Help). Social traffic lands on product pages, so the page has to say what the caption said.
  4. Add the cart banner and a how-it-works page. Shopify’s toolkit recommends a homepage banner and a dedicated page with an FAQ, and it publishes the approved FAQ answers you can paste (Shopify Help). That page becomes your link-in-bio destination for every installments post.
  5. Know what is excluded. Customers cannot buy gift cards or subscription products with Shop Pay Installments, and it cannot be enabled per product (Shopify Help). Your gift card posts and subscription posts should never mention installments.
  6. Flag slow-ship products. If a product might take more than 30 days to fulfill, such as a preorder or handcrafted item, Shopify requires specific messaging on the product page explaining that the first payment may be due before delivery (Shopify Help). Add it before you post a product launch teaser for a made-to-order item.
  7. Place a test order. Use a real product over $50, choose Shop Pay, pick installments, and see the options your customer sees. In the US that is two biweekly payments for $35 to $50, four biweekly interest-free payments for $50 to $999.99, and monthly plans from $150 up (Shopify Help).

One more Activate fact for retail stores: US merchants using Shopify POS can offer Shop Pay Installments in person at the same rates and amounts as online (Shopify Help). If you run a shop, Shopify has an approved social line for that, and it pairs with your local pickup posts.

Phase 2: Approve

Goal: choose the approved lines for your country, and learn which extra words turn a caption into a regulated advertisement.

Shopify’s instruction is blunt: use only the following approved messaging to promote Shop Pay Installments on social media, depending on your store’s location (Shopify Help). The US merchant toolkit adds that the Instagram and Facebook caption text must be used word for word, with the disclosure included in the caption (Shopify).

For a US store, the approved social lines are (Shopify Help):

  • We’re proud to offer more ways to pay. Now you can pay over time with Shop Pay and choose the plan that’s best for you.
  • We’re proud to offer more ways to pay. Get what you want in 4 interest-free payments or choose a monthly payment plan when you check out with Shop Pay.
  • We’re proud to offer Shop Pay Installments! Buy today and pay in 4 or more payments starting at 0% APR.
  • Shop Pay Installments is available in store! Shop your favorites in person with flexible payment options. Stop by and ask us how to get started.

Canada has three English lines and three French lines, and any post that might reach Québec residents must be in French, or in French and English with equal prominence (Shopify Help). The UK has three lines, each ending “No late fees. Ever.”, and every one must be accompanied by the Financial Promotion Disclosure (Shopify Help).

Approve checklist:

  1. Copy the lines into a saved caption library. One entry per line, per country, with the disclosure already attached underneath. Never retype them.
  2. Write your hook separately. The approved line is not the whole caption. Your first sentence about the product, your photo, and your call to action are yours. The sentence that describes paying over time is Shopify’s.
  3. Learn the trigger terms. Under the Truth in Lending Act, mentioning more than 4 payments, a repayment period like 6 or 12 months, a monthly payment amount, a specific interest rate, or a down payment amount requires a representative example with purchase price, monthly payment, term, and APR (Shopify Help). Phrases that do not trigger it include “Pay over time,” “Buy now, pay later,” “Interest-free,” and “4 interest-free payments.”
  4. Use the product promotion format for prices. Shopify’s approved US and Canada format is “$100 or flexible payments starting at payments of $25” (Shopify Help). Do not invent a monthly figure for a product; that is a trigger term.
  5. Treat the other headline lists as banner and email copy. Shopify’s announcement, personalized, and promotional headlines, such as “Gift today, pay later,” are documented for homepage banners and emails (Shopify Help). The Canadian toolkit says custom marketing that differs from the recommended messaging should be submitted to Affirm for review before it goes live (Shopify). If you want a banner headline in a caption, ask first.
  6. Download the artwork, then read the rules. The Shop Pay Installments logo cannot be scaled below 166 by 42 pixels, recolored, skewed, or given effects, and the license covers only promoting installments for your own store. Affirm’s trademarks are not licensed to you (Shopify Help). Use the artwork on a Story frame, not as a wallpaper.

Phase 3: Attach

Goal: put the approved line and its disclosure into the formats you actually post, and give every post a destination where the full terms live.

The disclosure is the part merchants forget, and it is the part Affirm checks. Shopify’s approved messaging page says to include the legal disclosure for your country anywhere you advertise Shop Pay Installments payment plans (Shopify Help). The US toolkit gives a full disclosure for posts with room, and a shortened version for space-constrained posts that reads “Subject to eligibility. See lending terms at affirm.com/disclosures” (Shopify). The Canadian toolkit says in-feed posts and Reels with no link must carry “Subject to eligibility. Terms apply.” and that any hyperlinked asset must put the full disclosure no more than one click away (Shopify).

Attach checklist:

  1. Feed posts and carousels. Hook, product line, approved installments line, disclosure, then your CTA. Put the disclosure before any hashtags so it is not buried. On a carousel, keep the installments line on the caption, not on a slide, unless you can fit the disclosure on the same slide.
  2. Reels and Shorts. Say the approved line in the caption, not in a voiceover you cannot disclose against. If the Reel’s on-screen text mentions paying over time, the caption carries the disclosure. For UK stores, the toolkit requires the Financial Promotion Disclosure on screen for the duration of any video that communicates the promotion, and it cannot be hyperlinked (Shopify).
  3. Stories. One frame: product, approved line as the only text, disclosure in smaller type, link sticker to your how-it-works page. Save it to a Highlight named Pay over time, next to Shipping and Returns in your Stories Highlights.
  4. Link in bio. Point one slot in your Shopify link in bio at the how-it-works page from Phase 1. That page holds the full disclosure and FAQ, which makes the shortened social disclosure defensible.
  5. Pinned comments and saved replies. When someone asks “do you do payment plans?”, answer with the approved line plus the shortened disclosure, then the link. Store it wherever you keep your comment and DM replies. Do not freestyle a “yep, four payments, no interest” reply. Point loan questions to Affirm’s Shop Pay Installments help center for your country, which Shopify lists on its FAQ page (Shopify Help).
  6. Product tags and catalog. Installment amounts already display on your product pages through the banner, so tagged products in your Meta catalog inherit the right information when the shopper lands. Do not paste installment math into product descriptions that sync to channels.
  7. Email, not just social. Shopify Help suggests adding approved messaging to BFCM, Christmas, end-of-year, and Valentine’s emails, and lists approved abandoned cart headlines such as “Check out now, pay over time.” Every email must include an unsubscribe option, the disclosure, and a physical address (Shopify Help). The social and email loop can carry the same line on both sides.

What not to attach: a custom “as low as $22/month” graphic, a Story that says “6 easy payments,” or a Reel where you promise “no credit check.” The first two are trigger terms without a representative example. The third is not what Shopify’s customer experience page says; eligibility involves a check (Shopify Help).

Phase 4: Audit

Goal: catch the two compliance traps before Affirm does, then keep the posts honest through Q4.

Audit checklist:

  1. Run the fair lending check on every boosted post. Shopify says that if you use paid media to promote Shop Pay Installments in the US you must follow fair lending guidelines under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act: target a broad demographic, and do not aim installments marketing at specific groups by age, gender, race, religion, national origin, marital status, or similar characteristics (Shopify Help). If your usual product launch ad set is narrowly targeted, do not add the installments line to it. Run installments creative broad or not at all.
  2. Strip the false urgency. Shopify’s UDAAP guidance asks for honest, clear marketing that avoids misrepresentation and a false sense of urgency, and that supports claims with facts (Shopify Help). “Payment plans end Sunday” is false if the feature is always on. Your discount code can have a deadline. The payment option does not.
  3. Check for trigger terms in every draft. Search captions for month, months, per month, down payment, APR with a number, and any payment count above four. If one shows up, either remove it or add the full representative example.
  4. Separate healthcare and elective products. Stores selling health products have additional guidance, including never combining installments messaging with statements about insurance, FSA, or HSA (Shopify Help).
  5. Watch the admin banner. If Affirm flags your marketing, a banner appears on the Shop Pay Installments settings page and you receive an email. “Requires action” gives you a deadline. “On hold” means installments are off for new orders until you fix the assets and reply, and reinstatement can take up to 30 days (Shopify Help). A hold in the first week of December is a Q4 you cannot get back.
  6. Handle refunds the right way. Shopify recommends refunding installments orders to the original payment method, because a store credit or gift card refund does nothing to the customer’s Affirm balance, and paid interest is not refunded (Shopify Help). Orders paid with installments cannot be edited; you refund and recreate (Shopify Help). Put that in your holiday return policy saved reply.
  7. Measure it. In Orders, search “Shop Pay Installments” to list orders that used it, or filter payout transactions by payment method (Shopify Help). Compare the week you started posting against the week before, using the same UTM discipline as your social ROI tracking.

What should a Shopify store post about Shop Pay Installments?

The public part is small and repetitive on purpose. You are reminding people the option exists at the moment the price matters, not running a campaign about lending.

Canada and UK merchants: the trigger term list above is from Shopify’s US compliance page. Your toolkit has its own rules, and the UK Financial Promotion Disclosure applies to every social asset. Read your country’s toolkit PDF, linked from the marketing toolkit page, and ask a lawyer about the markets you sell to.

How does Shop Pay Installments fit the rest of the Q4 plan?

With BFCM. The Seed-Stack-Sprint-Softland calendar puts checkout testing in late October. Add the installments test order to that list, and add the approved line to the Sprint captions for hero products over $50.

With the gift guide. Every Pick-Page-Pitch-Prove pitch post for a qualifying item can carry the line. Items under $35 (or £50 in the UK) cannot use installments at all, so leave it off budget picks.

With early access. Early access buyers are your highest-intent shoppers. The how-it-works Highlight should exist before the early access window opens, because that is the DM you will get.

With bundles. A bundle is the easiest way to move an order from under $50 into the four-payment range. Say so in the bundle caption with the approved line, not with your own math.

With gift cards. Gift cards are excluded, and Shopify’s own FAQ copy tells customers to place two separate orders if they want a card plus installment-eligible products (Shopify Help). Never combine the two in one post.

With returns. Refund installments orders to the original payment method, and say so in the return policy Highlight.

Mistakes that get a Shop Pay Installments account put on hold

Rewriting the approved line. Shopify says use only the approved social messaging, and the US toolkit says word for word (Shopify Help). “Split it into 4, zero interest, easy” is not on the list.

Dropping the disclosure on Reels. Space constraints are the reason the shortened disclosure exists. They are not a reason to skip it.

Quoting a monthly figure. A monthly payment amount is a trigger term. Without the full representative example, it is a TILA problem (Shopify Help).

Boosting to a narrow audience. Installments creative in paid media has to target broadly under fair lending guidelines (Shopify Help).

Promising installments on a gift card or subscription. Both are excluded (Shopify Help).

Ignoring the admin banner. “Requires action” has a deadline. Miss it and the next message is “on hold.”

Using the logo as a background. The artwork rules are specific about size, color, and effects, and the license ends if you break them (Shopify Help).

FAQ

Can I write my own caption about Shop Pay Installments?

Not for the installments part. Shopify Help says to use only the approved social media messaging for your store’s country, and the US merchant toolkit says the caption text must be used word for word with the disclosure included. You can write your own hook, product description, and call to action around it. The line that describes paying over time, and the disclosure that follows it, stay exactly as Shopify publishes them.

Do I need a disclosure on every Shop Pay Installments post?

Yes. Shopify’s approved messaging page says to include the legal disclosure for your country anywhere you advertise Shop Pay Installments payment plans. The US toolkit provides a shortened version for feed posts and Reels that cannot hold a link, and the Canadian toolkit does the same. UK stores must add the full Financial Promotion Disclosure to the caption or the creative itself. If you cannot fit it, do not post it.

Which Shopify stores can offer Shop Pay Installments?

Stores in the United States selling in USD, in Canada selling in CAD, and in the United Kingdom selling in GBP, with both Shopify Payments and Shop Pay active and one Shopify Payments account in one market. US retail locations using Shopify POS can offer it in person too. Orders from $35 to $30,000 USD or CAD, or £50 to £30,000, qualify, including shipping and taxes. Gift cards and subscription products cannot be bought with installments.

Can I say “4 interest-free payments” in a post?

In the United States, yes, because it is inside an approved social line and Shopify lists “4 interest-free payments” among the phrases that do not trigger a representative example. What does trigger one is more than 4 payments, a repayment period like 6 or 12 months, a monthly payment amount, a specific interest rate, or a down payment amount. If you mention any of those, you must show a full representative example with price, monthly payment, term, and APR.

What happens if my Shop Pay Installments post is non-compliant?

Shopify Help says that if your marketing does not follow the compliance and approved messaging guidelines, a banner appears on the Shop Pay Installments settings page in your admin and Affirm emails you. Affirm may place your Shop Pay Installments account on hold, which stops installments on new orders until you fix the assets and reply. Reinstatement can take up to 30 days. That is why the Audit phase runs before Q4, not after.
