Live Shopping for Shopify Stores: A Practical Guide

Live shopping for Shopify stores with Pick-Prep-Pin-Replay: pick a surface that sells in-stream, prep the catalog, pin one product at a time, then replay.

Plant shop owner in a green apron, seen from the side, holding a potted fern toward a phone on a tripod between two softbox lights, with a second phone on a stand and shelves of terracotta pots behind

You went live once. Forty people showed up, three asked for the price, and one wrote “link?” eleven times. Nothing sold because nothing was tappable. The stream was good. The checkout was not there.

Live shopping for a Shopify store is a checkout problem before it is a content problem. Some platforms let viewers buy while they watch. Some only let them watch. You pick the surface that can sell, prep the catalog it needs, pin one product at a time while you talk, then turn the recording into a week of posts. Use Pick-Prep-Pin-Replay.

Key Takeaways

  • Pick a surface that sells in-stream: TikTok LIVE, YouTube live streams, and Facebook Live all let viewers tap a product while watching. Instagram Live has not had product tags since March 16, 2023.
  • Prep the product list where the platform reads it: TikTok pulls from your LIVE Showcase, YouTube from the Shopping tab in Studio, Facebook from a Live Producer product list. None of them read your Shopify admin directly.
  • Pin one product, then pin it again: Every platform pins one item at a time. TikTok’s guidance is to re-pin every 30 seconds. YouTube can rotate tagged products every 60 seconds for you.
  • Replay is the real campaign: Post the recording to the product page, clip it into Shorts and Reels, and send the recap. The hour on air is the shoot, not the whole sale.

Why does live shopping need a Shopify-specific plan?

Live selling is not new and it is not small. Shopify’s 2026 live shopping guide cites eMarketer figures showing US livestream ecommerce sales grew nearly 50% in 2025 to $14.64 billion (Shopify). The same guide’s first piece of advice is to focus on one platform instead of streaming to five at once.

Shopify itself does not stream. It holds the catalog, the inventory, and the orders. Each live surface reads a different copy of that catalog:

  1. TikTok LIVE reads the products you synced to TikTok Shop through the TikTok sales channel and added to your LIVE Showcase (Shopify Help; TikTok Shop Academy)
  2. YouTube live streams read the products you synced through the Google & YouTube channel and tagged in Studio (Shopify Help)
  3. Facebook Live reads a Commerce Manager or Shops catalog through Live Producer (Meta Business Help)

So the failure modes are boring and specific: the product was never synced, the sync was rejected, the item was never added to the platform’s list, or nobody pinned it. Fix those four and the stream sells. This guide sits between the TikTok Shop setup and YouTube Shopping setup guides, which get the channels connected, and the day you actually press Go LIVE.

The Pick-Prep-Pin-Replay framework

Pick-Prep-Pin-Replay puts the checkout decision first, then the platform’s product list, then the on-air routine, then the content you get out of the recording. Do not announce a live until Prep is done and you have completed one test order from the platform’s product card.

Phase 1: Pick

Goal: choose the one surface where a viewer can tap a product and reach your checkout.

Ask where the order is completed, not where your audience is biggest. A big audience on a surface with no product card gives you comments, not orders.

TikTok LIVE. Shopify’s TikTok Shop overview lists LIVE shopping as a selling method: when you are LIVE, viewers can browse and purchase products directly from the stream (Shopify Help). Your store must be in one of the supported countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Japan, or Brazil), have a verifiable address, and display a return policy page (Shopify Help). For your own account, TikTok’s US creator policy says there is no minimum follower requirement to bind as an Official or Marketing Account, and bound accounts can go live without a follower minimum (TikTok Shop Academy; TikTok Shop Academy). Affiliate creators promoting other sellers need 1,000 followers, and accounts under 5,000 followers in the pilot program are limited to three shoppable LIVEs a week (TikTok Shop Academy).

YouTube live streams. Shopify Help states you can display products on your videos’ watch pages and live streams, and that eligible US merchants get in-app checkout while everyone else sends the viewer to the online store (Shopify Help). The bar is higher: at least 1,000 subscribers, monetization approval, a supported Partner Program country, and a channel account email that matches a full-permission Shopify staff account (Shopify Help). When a viewer opens a product tagged in a live stream, the video keeps playing in a mini-player while they browse or buy (YouTube Help).

Facebook Live. Meta’s live shopping tools let viewers browse pinned products and place orders through Messenger, your website, or a Meta Business Messaging Partner (Meta Business Help). If your products are in a Commerce Manager or Shops catalog, including one originally synced from a third-party platform, viewers are redirected to the website URL you provide and can keep watching in a small window (Meta Business Help). You need a business Page with full control or admin access plus a business portfolio (Meta Business Help). Your Meta catalog setup is the prerequisite.

Instagram Live. Meta’s own page carries the update: Live Shopping is no longer available as of March 16, 2023 (Meta for Business). Go live for the Q&A or the first look, and send buyers to your Shopify link in bio, a Story link, or a DM with the product URL. In June 2026 Meta said it is bringing Live Video Ads to Instagram and expanding them on Facebook; those promote a live to new people, they do not put a product card inside it (Meta for Business).

Your own storefront. Shopify’s guide lists tools such as Bambuser, Now Live, and Channelize.io that embed a live player on your site, and Meta names CommentSold, Firework, LiveMeUp, Sprii, and TalkShopLive as US live commerce partners for its live video ads (Shopify; Meta for Business). These are paid apps with their own setup. Try a native surface first.

Pick checklist:

  1. Write down where the order completes for your top choice: in-app, your checkout, or a DM.
  2. Confirm the channel is connected and at least one product shows Approved or Active on that platform.
  3. Complete one real test order from the platform’s product card on a phone, then refund it.
  4. Choose one platform for the first three lives. Shopify’s guide says to skip a peak like Black Friday for your first attempt (Shopify).

Phase 2: Prep

Goal: build the platform’s product list, the script, and the moderation setup before you tell anyone the date.

Shopify’s guide recommends starting with no more than ten products, ideally bestsellers or your latest launch (Shopify). Ten is also about what a host can present properly in an hour.

Prep checklist:

  1. Check inventory per product. Quote the count you can actually ship. If a set is involved, use the lowest-component math from the bundles plan.
  2. Add products where the platform reads them. On TikTok, products must be in your LIVE Showcase before they can be featured; you add them from the Products button on the pre-LIVE screen or from the shopping bag during the stream, and everything in the Showcase is added by default (TikTok Shop Academy). On YouTube, open Studio, click Create, then Go Live, choose Stream or Manage, and use the Shopping tab below the preview to tag up to 30 items (YouTube Help; YouTube Help). On Facebook, create the event in Live Producer, open Stream setup, and build a product list of up to 100 catalog items (Meta Business Help).
  3. Order the list the way you will present it. YouTube’s channel-level product arrangements do not apply to live streams, so arrange the live stream’s tags separately (YouTube Help). Facebook allows only one catalog per live video (Meta Business Help).
  4. Build the live-only code. Use Name-Narrow-Link-Limit so the code has a name you can say out loud and an end time you can defend. Meta’s special promotional price for live products is API-based and may not be available to you yet (Meta Business Help), so a Shopify code is the reliable path.
  5. Write the loop, not a speech. TikTok’s guidance: open with a greeting, introduce products and features, repeat both often because viewers come and go, and end with a reason to return (TikTok Shop Academy).
  6. Assign moderators. TikTok lets you add up to 20 moderators per live from Settings before you start (TikTok Shop Academy). Give them the reply templates from your comments and DMs playbook.
  7. Set the room. TikTok recommends bright, even lighting, a tripod, and two charged phones, one to film and one to manage comments (TikTok Shop Academy). A shelf of real product behind you beats a backdrop.
  8. Schedule the teasers. TikTok suggests at least one teaser posted a day before, promoted again two hours before, under 30 seconds, with the countdown sticker and the Shop products attached (TikTok Shop Academy). Add a Story countdown on Instagram even if the live is elsewhere.

Content ideas that survive a live: a launch first look from your product launch plan, a “which one is right for you” comparison, a packing session, or a restock hour.

Phase 3: Pin

Goal: keep one tappable product on screen the whole time you are talking about it.

A teal glazed mug on a wooden turntable lit by a clip lamp at the front of a shop counter, with five neutral mugs waiting in shadow behind it, an hourglass mid-pour to the right, and a phone on a small tripod filming from the left

Every platform works the same way here: one pinned product at a time, and if you do not pin, viewers see nothing.

On TikTok, tap the shopping bag in the bottom-left corner, open the Shop LIVE list, and tap Pin beside the product you are holding. TikTok’s tip is to pin the card every 30 seconds, because otherwise it disappears and fewer people click, and pinning a second product unpins the first (TikTok Shop Academy).

On YouTube, use the Shopping tab in the Live Control Room to pin or unpin a single item, or turn on the toggle that auto-pins your tagged products one after another and rotates them every 60 seconds. The rotation is desktop only (YouTube Help).

On Facebook, the catalog sits on the right of the Live Producer dashboard. Click Pin to show a product on the video; only one can be pinned at a time, and unpinned products do not appear (Meta Business Help).

Two platform clocks and one of your own:

  • 30 seconds is TikTok’s re-pin cadence
  • 60 seconds is YouTube’s auto-rotation interval
  • 10 minutes is our suggested reset: say who you are, what is pinned, the price on the card, and the code, because the room has turned over since you last said it

Pin checklist:

  1. Hold the product, say the price the card shows, then pin. Never pin an item you are not holding.
  2. Put the call to action right after the demo, not at the end. Shopify’s guide makes the same point (Shopify).
  3. Quote the honest count from Prep. “Six left in the blue” beats “selling fast.”
  4. Have the second-phone person paste the product URL when someone asks “link?”, and switch to the DM script when a buyer needs help off-stream.
  5. When a product sells out, unpin it and say so. Then pin the next one.
  6. End with the return reason from your script: the next date, the restock, or the replay.

Phase 4: Replay

Goal: turn one hour of video into a week of content that keeps the pinned products selling.

Shopify’s guide recommends a recap email with the featured products and codes, and posting the replay on your product pages so the live keeps selling (Shopify). The recording is the asset. Treat the hour on air as the shoot.

Replay checklist:

  1. Trim the replay and embed or link it on the product pages of everything you pinned.
  2. Cut the three best demos into YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, each with the product tagged where the platform allows it.
  3. Send the recap through the loop in connecting social and email, with the code’s real end time.
  4. Check what sold. TikTok Shop orders arrive in your Shopify admin through the sales channel (Shopify Help). YouTube shows Shopify sales and orders in the Revenue tab of YouTube Analytics, with the caveat that its numbers may not match Shopify’s (YouTube Help). Tag your website links with UTMs from the social media ROI guide so Facebook and Instagram traffic is visible too.
  5. Book the next live before you close the laptop. TikTok Shop UK’s guidance for new sellers is roughly once a week for about two hours, because viewers rotate through the room and you reintroduce the brand repeatedly (TikTok Shop). Start with an hour and grow.

What should a Shopify store post around a live?

The stream is one hour. The content around it is seven days. Pick, Prep, and most of Pin stay internal.

A few limits worth knowing before you pick:

  • YouTube’s in-app checkout does not support product bundles, subscriptions, or personalized items, which fall back to your online store (Shopify Help)
  • YouTube Shopping features will not show if the content is set as made for kids, carries a copyright claim, uses a revenue-sharing Creator Music track, or the viewer is on a mobile browser, smart TV, or game console (YouTube Help)
  • TikTok Shop is operated and supported by TikTok, so LIVE issues go to TikTok Shop support, not Shopify (Shopify Help)

Because eligibility and checkout rules change by market, repeat the Pick test order before every campaign.

How does live shopping fit next to launches, bundles, and BFCM?

Live is a format, not a season. It borrows from the plans you already run.

If a launch is coming. Make the live the first-look slot in the product launch plan and pin the new product first.

If you sell bundles. The free Shopify Bundles app lists the online store and headless storefronts as supported and calls other sales channels unsupported, and YouTube’s in-app checkout excludes bundles (bundles plan; Shopify Help). Pin the components on the live and send the “whole set” ask to the bundle URL on your store.

If BFCM is near. Shopify’s advice is not to debut on a peak day (Shopify). Run two lives in October so the BFCM plan can include a third with a working routine.

If the gift guide is live. A live is the fastest way to answer “who is this for?” across a gift guide. Present by recipient, pin by product.

If your audience is on Instagram. Go live there for the conversation, then run the shoppable version on TikTok or YouTube and tell Instagram where to find it.

Mistakes that waste a live

Going live where nothing is tappable. Instagram Live has had no product tags since March 16, 2023 (Meta for Business).

Skipping the Showcase or the Shopping tab. TikTok only features products already in the LIVE Showcase (TikTok Shop Academy). YouTube’s channel-level arrangement does not carry into live streams (YouTube Help).

Forgetting to pin. On Facebook, products you do not pin never show on the video (Meta Business Help). On TikTok, an unrefreshed card disappears (TikTok Shop Academy).

Pinning two things at once. Every platform unpins the first when you pin the second.

Saving the call to action for the end. The viewer who was ready after the demo has left (Shopify).

Streaming to five platforms at once. Shopify’s guide says focus on one (Shopify). Five product lists means five things to break.

Treating the live as the campaign. The replay, the clips, and the recap keep selling long after the hour is over. Skip them and you paid for one hour of reach.

Debuting on Black Friday. Practice in October.

FAQ

Can Shopify stores do live shopping on Instagram?

Not with product tags. Meta’s own update states that Instagram Live Shopping is no longer available as of March 16, 2023. You can still go live on Instagram for a Q&A or a first look, but the purchase path is your link in bio, a Story link, or a DM with the product URL. In 2026 Meta announced Live Video Ads for Instagram, which promote a live, not tag products inside it.

Do I need followers to sell on TikTok LIVE from my Shopify store?

TikTok’s US creator eligibility policy says there is no minimum follower requirement to bind your own account to your TikTok Shop as an Official or Marketing Account, and bound accounts can go LIVE without a follower minimum. Affiliate creators promoting other sellers’ products need at least 1,000 followers, and accounts under 5,000 followers in the pilot program are limited to three shoppable LIVEs per week.

How many products can I tag in a YouTube live stream?

YouTube Help says you can tag and rearrange up to 30 items for a live stream. You pin one item from the Shopping tab in the Live Control Room, or turn on the toggle that auto-pins tagged products one after another and rotates them every 60 seconds. The multi-pin rotation is desktop only.

Does Facebook Live still support shopping?

Yes. Meta’s live shopping tools let you build a product list of up to 100 catalog items in Live Producer and pin one product at a time during the broadcast. With a Commerce Manager or Shops catalog, viewers are redirected to the website URL you provide to check out and can keep watching in a small window. You need a business Page with full control and a business portfolio.

Does Shopify have a built-in live shopping feature?

No. Shopify does not stream video. It supplies the catalog, inventory, and orders behind live selling on other surfaces: the TikTok sales channel for TikTok LIVE, the Google & YouTube channel for YouTube live streams, and the Facebook & Instagram channel for a Commerce Manager catalog you can pin on Facebook Live. Shopify’s own guide also lists third-party apps that embed a live player on your storefront.
