Etsy + Shopify: Keep Products Visible on Social

Sell on Etsy and Shopify without ghosted social listings. Keep catalog truth in sync for posts, shops, and ads with one weekly routine.

To keep products visible on social when you sell on both Etsy and Shopify, make Shopify the one record where price, photos, and stock live. Build every post from that record, and send each post to the one channel where its price and stock are true. That is Stock · Story · Serve, and it stops the wrong-price, still-sold-out posts that make one shop look like two.

Here is how the drift usually starts. You raise a mug’s price on Shopify on Tuesday. The Etsy listing still shows last month’s price. On Thursday, a post you scheduled weeks ago goes out with a third price in the caption. Someone comments to ask which one is real. Meanwhile, the planter that sold out on Etsy over the weekend is still in Saturday’s Pin.

None of that is a content problem. It is a catalog problem that shows up on social.

If you are new to selling on both, there is no built-in bridge. Shopify’s Marketplace Connect app syncs listings, orders, and inventory with Amazon, Target Plus, Walmart, and eBay, but Shopify says new connections to Etsy can’t be made at this time. Stores already selling on Etsy through it can keep using it (Shopify Help). Shopify points everyone else to a CSV import for moving listings and to third-party Etsy integration apps for ongoing inventory and order sync (Shopify).

Key Takeaways

  • Make Shopify the master record: Change price, photos, and stock there first, then sync or copy to Etsy.
  • Keep prices out of scheduled captions: Let the product tag or the product page show the live price.
  • One link per post: Send each post to the channel where its price and stock are true, which is usually Shopify.
  • Run one weekly sync: Check stock, prices, sold-out and expired listings, and the next seven days of posts on both channels.

Why this matters now

Three things make two-channel drift easy to fall into.

The sync is on you. With new Etsy connections closed in Marketplace Connect, a new two-channel store syncs through a third-party app or by hand. Either way, someone has to check it.

Etsy already advertises your products on social. Etsy’s Offsite Ads program advertises listings on channels including Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. You pay only when a buyer clicks an ad and orders within 30 days: 15% if your shop has always made less than $10,000 USD in any 365-day period, or 12% once it has reached that, capped at $100 USD per order (Etsy Help). One shopper can meet your Etsy listing in an Instagram ad and your Shopify product in your own post on the same afternoon. If the photo, name, or price disagree, it looks like a mistake.

Social catalogs only take the store you own. Meta says that to sell with Shops, product links must be hosted on a website domain owned by your business (Meta). Pinterest says you can’t claim online stores hosted on marketplaces like Etsy, eBay, and Amazon (Pinterest Help). Your product tags and claimed Pins run on Shopify data. Etsy rides along as a plain link.

So the risk is not one wrong channel. It is three versions of one product live at once: your Shopify page, your Etsy listing, and whatever your last caption said.

The Stock · Story · Serve framework

Stock · Story · Serve is a catalog routine for stores that sell on both Etsy and Shopify. Stock decides what is true. Story turns that truth into posts. Serve sends each post to the channel that can keep its promise.

Stock: which record is the truth?

Goal: one record per product that every channel and every post copies from.

Make Shopify the master. It already feeds your social catalogs. Shopify’s Facebook and Instagram app syncs eligible products to your Facebook and Instagram shop from one inventory (Shopify App Store), and the Pinterest app keeps your Pinterest product catalog updated (Shopify App Store). If the Meta side isn’t set up yet, start with how to set up a Meta catalog on Shopify.

Then sort your catalog into three groups:

  1. Both channels: Products you sell on Shopify and Etsy.
  2. Shopify only: Products that don’t belong on Etsy. Etsy’s Creativity Standards say items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller (Etsy), and Etsy says reselling mass-produced items isn’t allowed outside limited exceptions (Etsy Help). A bought-in accessory you resell is the typical case.
  3. Etsy only: Items you keep on Etsy on purpose, such as one-off pieces or seconds.

Next, decide which fields must match and which can differ.

  • Must match: The product name (at least its first words), the SKU, the main photo, and your stock and price rules.
  • Can differ: Etsy titles can run to 140 characters, and a listing can hold up to 20 photos and 2 videos of 5 to 15 seconds (Etsy Help), plus up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each (Etsy Help). Use that room for Etsy search, but start the Etsy title with your Shopify product name.

Last, write down two rules.

Stock rule. If your sync app shares one stock pool, track quantity in Shopify. Shopify treats a tracked item at zero or below as out of stock, and by default customers can’t buy it until you add stock (Shopify Help). If you sync by hand, split the units instead, say 8 mugs on Shopify and 4 on Etsy, so a sale on one channel can’t oversell the other.

Price rule. Some sellers charge more on Etsy to cover marketplace fees. That is your call. Write the rule down for each product, because a caption quoting the wrong channel’s price is how the “which one is real?” comments start.

Story: how do you turn that truth into posts?

Goal: posts that stay correct when the catalog changes.

Build every product post from the Shopify record: its photo, its product name, and one benefit line. “Holds a full pour-over and still fits under the machine” is a benefit. “Back by popular demand!!” is not.

Then hold three caption rules:

  1. No prices in scheduled captions. A product tag pulls its price from your catalog. A caption typed three weeks ago does not.
  2. No stock counts. “Only 3 left” goes stale with the next order.
  3. One “where to buy” line. “Shop it on our site” or “Find it in our Etsy shop.” Never both.

If you auto-post products, point the automation at your Shopify catalog, not a copy of it, as covered in how to auto-post Shopify products to social media.

When a product sells out, its posts come down.

Pause every scheduled post that features it, on every platform, the same day, and swap in a sibling product. When it returns, announce the restock instead of reviving the old post.

Check Etsy too. Etsy says you can’t manually mark a listing as sold out; its quantity has to sell through (Etsy Help). With split stock, that is fine while the units are real. When the last units are gone everywhere, deactivate the Etsy listing yourself. Etsy files those under Inactive in Shop Manager > Listings (Etsy Help).

Serve: where should each post send people?

Goal: every link lands on a page where the post’s price and stock are true.

Make Shopify the default destination for product tags, Pins, Story links, and your bio link. It is the only one of your two stores that Meta and Pinterest let you connect as your own. If your bio holds several links, set up a Shopify link in bio so product pages come first.

Use Etsy links on purpose: for Etsy-only items, or for an audience you know buys on Etsy. Join Etsy’s Share & Save program first. When a buyer orders within 30 days of clicking a link you shared off Etsy, Etsy refunds 4% of the eligible order total to your Etsy Payment account. Links in Etsy Messages or listing descriptions don’t count (Etsy Help).

One rule runs the other way. Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy says any action to move a transaction off Etsy is strictly prohibited, including encouraging buyers to purchase an item in your Etsy shop through another venue or directing them elsewhere with a QR code (Etsy). Its Seller Policy adds that Etsy Messages may not be used to offer discounts or incentives to buy through another website (Etsy). To stay clear of both, keep Shopify discount codes and QR codes out of Etsy messages and Etsy orders.

Worked example: a Monday sync for a two-channel ceramics shop

Here is the routine for a small ceramics studio that sells mugs and planters on both channels. It runs every Monday morning, before anything new is scheduled. The product, prices, and stock numbers are examples.

What does the weekly sync check?

CheckShopify (master)Etsy listingSocial
Product nameSpeckled Oat Mug, 12 ozTitle starts with “Speckled Oat Mug,” then keywordsCaptions use the Shopify name
Main photoFirst product imageSame photo firstPosts use that photo or one from the same shoot

Listing statusActiveActive, not Sold out, Expired, or Inactive in Shop Manager > ListingsNo post links to a listing nobody can buy
Next 7 daysProducts in the queueSame products still for saleEvery link matches its “where to buy” line

One Etsy detail belongs in the status check. Listings stay active for four months and renew automatically by default (Etsy Help), and each creation or renewal costs $0.20 USD (Etsy Help). If you switched a listing to manual renewal, an old post can outlive it. The Monday check catches that link before a shopper does.

What do the posts look like after the sync?

Five posts, two destinations, and no prices in captions. Four of the five run on the Shopify record, which is the first thing the Monday sync checks.

Platform plan: Instagram and Pinterest

Pick two platforms for product visibility and stay at two until the Monday sync feels routine. For this shop, that is Instagram, where people see the product, and Pinterest, where they save it.

Instagram: tag from the Shopify catalog

Tag products from the Shopify catalog that the Facebook and Instagram app syncs. Etsy listings don’t fit that catalog, because Meta wants shop product links on a domain your business owns. Run feed posts and Stories from the same Shopify photos, and for a hands-off setup see how to auto-post Shopify products to Instagram.

Write Instagram captions for Instagram. Pasting your Pinterest description or Etsy tags into them is the copy-everywhere habit that platform-adaptive posting instead of cross-posting replaces.

Pinterest: claim the store you own

Claim your Shopify domain, not your Etsy shop. Pinterest says that to claim a website you must own the domain and be able to edit its source code, which rules out most marketplace shops, Etsy included.

Install the Pinterest app for Shopify to publish Product Pins and keep your catalog current, then see how to auto-post Shopify products to Pinterest for scheduled Pins on top of it. Point Pins at Shopify product pages. Pins that link to Etsy still work; they just sit outside the website you claimed and its reporting.

If Facebook is your second platform instead of Pinterest, the rule is the same: the Meta catalog behind your Instagram tags also feeds your Facebook shop.

Common mistakes that ghost your products on social

Editing Etsy first. You change a price on Etsy, mean to update Shopify later, and don’t. Edit Shopify first, every time.

Leaving sold-out products on the schedule. A post for a product nobody can buy sends people to a dead end. Pull it the day stock hits zero.

Letting Etsy’s ads and your posts disagree. Offsite Ads can show your Etsy listing on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest while your posts show the Shopify version. Use the same main photo and product name on both. If your shop has always made less than $10,000 USD in any 365-day period, you can also opt out of Offsite Ads and keep social for Shopify.

Pasting Etsy tags as hashtags. Etsy tags are search phrases for Etsy. On Instagram they read like a keyword list. Write each caption for its platform.

Pointing Etsy buyers at Shopify. A Shopify discount card in an Etsy order, or a store link in an Etsy message, is the kind of off-platform push Etsy’s policies prohibit. Promote your site on your own channels.

Put Stock · Story · Serve to work this week

  1. Stock: Mark each Shopify product as both channels, Shopify only, or Etsy only. Write the price rule and the stock rule for every product sold on both.
  2. Story: Strip prices and stock counts from everything already scheduled. Rebuild the next two weeks from Shopify photos and names.
  3. Serve: Point every product post at Shopify, claim your Shopify domain on Pinterest, and join Share & Save before you post an Etsy link.

Then run the Monday sync once, before the next post goes out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect Etsy to Shopify with Marketplace Connect?

Not as a new connection. Shopify's Help Center says new connections to Etsy can't be made at this time with Marketplace Connect, though stores already selling on Etsy through it can keep using it. For new sellers, Shopify points to a CSV import for listings and to third-party Etsy integration apps for ongoing inventory and order sync.

Should my social posts link to Etsy or to my Shopify store?

Link product posts to Shopify by default. Meta says product links in Facebook and Instagram shops must be hosted on a domain your business owns, and Pinterest says marketplace shops like Etsy can't be claimed. Use Etsy links for Etsy-only items, and join Etsy's Share & Save program first so eligible orders from those links earn a 4% refund.

Can I list every Shopify product on Etsy?

Not always. Etsy's Creativity Standards say items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, and Etsy's Help Center says reselling mass-produced items isn't allowed outside limited exceptions. Mark products that fail that test as Shopify only, and never promote them as available on Etsy.

Can I send my Etsy buyers to my Shopify store?

Not from inside Etsy. Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy strictly prohibits moving a transaction off Etsy, including encouraging buyers to purchase an item in your Etsy shop through another venue or using a QR code to send them elsewhere. Its Seller Policy also bars using Etsy Messages to offer discounts for buying through another website. Promote your site on your own social accounts.

Why are my Etsy listings showing up in ads I didn't make?

Usually Etsy Offsite Ads. Etsy advertises listings on channels including Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, and charges only when a buyer clicks and orders within 30 days: 15% for shops that have always made under $10,000 USD in any 365-day period, which can opt out, or 12% for shops past it, which can't. The fee is capped at $100 USD per order.
